Showering Can be Hazardous to Your HealthMost people would not voluntarily set out to do things which are harmful to their skin, hair, lungs, and sinuses each morning.
Most people would not voluntarily set out to do things which are harmful to their skin, hair, lungs, and sinuses each morning. Yet many people unknowingly do this every morning unaware that their shower water contains toxins which increase their risk of cancer and otherwise harm their health. Some of the toxins that can be lurking in your bath water are:
Chlorine: Chlorine is added to most municipal water supplies as a disinfectant. Some of the negative health consequences associated with chlorine include skin irritation, a destruction of proteins in the body, sinus problems, and aggravation of respiratory ailments such as asthma and allergies. Chloroform: This chemical is a known carcinogen and a by product of the chlorination process. Chloroform causes normal cells to mutate and accelerates aging by causing excessive free radical formation. DCA (Dichloro acetic acid): This chemical is another by product of the chlorination process and is known to cause cancer in laboratory animals. It also alters cholesterol metabolism. MX (another chlorinated acid): This chemical is almost always found in chlorinated water and is known to cause genetic mutations. This chemical has been associated with cancer formation. Drinking chlorinated water also puts one at greater risk for bladder and rectal cancer. While you dont drink the water in your shower, you do absorb the chemicals in the water through your skin. During a ten minute shower your body will intake as much chlorine through your skin than if would if you drank eight glasses of water. The hot water in the shower opens your pores and allows the chemicals in the water to come into your body. While you are showering you are bringing the chemicals from your water directly into your bloodstream, as well as inhaling the vapors in the steam. Some people already have shown the signs of chlorine exposure such as skin, eye, or sinus irritation. Some of the risks of long term exposure include an increased risk of cancer, hardened arteries, and cell and tissue aging. Chlorinated water can also exacerbate conditions you may already have such as asthma and allergies. Using a shower filter can instantly eliminate these hazards from your morning routine.
